 Working with Batteries (IM1) 

Hazards

  Instructions to minimise risk

Explosion of batteries, leading to acids or alkali  burns  
Staff will not smoke or take naked flames into a battery room, or near to batteries
Electrical burns Staff shall not work on battery circuits until satisfied the circuits have been disconnected and locked off 

Staff working with batteries will wear eye protection and other appropriate protective clothing

 Staff will familiarise themselves with the location of medical equipment on site 

Staff will not wear metal objects such as bracelets or necklaces when working with batteries

  
  
First aid information

In the event of skin or eyes coming into contact with acids or alkalis, flush with water (or in the case of eyes with an eye wash) and seek urgent medical assistance.
General information

When charging lead acid batteries, hydrogen gas is produced, which is highly explosive. 

Many serious accidents have occurred with gas exploding within the battery, spraying acid and debris around.
